Pay Attention to What You’re Paying Attention To: Lessons on Frequency, Whispers and Gifts with JJ DiGeronimo

JJ DiGeronimo did everything “right.” She spent 20 years in tech, mostly in Silicon Valley. And she built a long list of accomplishments. She had kids later in life. And still, she carried a nagging sense that something was missing. She was searching for something else, but she didn’t know what.

If you’ve ever looked at a life that seems good on paper and wondered why it doesn’t feel good from the inside, JJ’s story will sound familiar.

I was so excited to welcome her to this final season of See Her Now, which is all about embodiment: living more connected to who you really are, in your body, in this moment. JJ’s work touches every part of that, from spirituality and frequency to intuition and purpose. Here’s what she shared.

Not one breakdown, but many crossroads

When I asked JJ what set her on this path, I half expected a single dramatic turning point. Instead, she described something I think many women will recognize: a series of things that kept poking at her until she couldn’t ignore them anymore.

First, she left high-tech and corporate life to start her own business. That move alone was an awakening. She realized how much she had tied her accomplishments to how much she liked herself. Then some big contracts she was counting on didn’t come through, and she had to sit with her ego, and with what it feels like to not be who you thought you were. On top of that, patterns in her relationship kept surfacing in ways she didn’t want to face.

Up to that point, JJ’s self-care had looked like a massage, a self-help book, or wine with her girlfriends at book club. Now she had to dig deeper. She had to work through her stories. She had to learn to like herself without any accomplishments at all, and to love herself regardless of what the world was saying.

Some people call these “tower moments.” JJ calls them crossroads, and she sees them as the first phase of spiritual awakening: moments that try to wake us up and help us remember why we’re here.

That realization led her to a tapping class, then Reiki, and eventually to around 150 different practitioners over 15 years. Each one, she says, helped her remember who she is.

Your journey is built just for you

One idea I loved most is JJ’s belief that each of us has our own curriculum. Her journey wouldn’t fit yours, and yours wouldn’t fit your best friend’s. The places we grow up, the families we’re part of, and the experiences we move through all come with lessons. She’s careful to add that not everything is chosen or deserved.

For JJ, much of her curriculum came from watching her mother. Her mom was silenced in her marriage, with a husband who took away much of her joy. Seeing that firsthand showed JJ something she has never forgotten: women can be trapped in ways that don’t look like a trap from the outside. We tend to picture women held back by physical circumstances or strict systems in other parts of the world. But many women are stuck in lives that look perfectly fine to everyone else.

Today, a core part of JJ’s work is helping women recognize what’s actually holding them back, and step out of it.

A glimpse of her life’s work, in high school

JJ believes we often glimpse our purpose long before we understand it. Hers came at a clothing-store register during the Christmas rush, when she was in high school.

She watched a man grip a woman’s arm tightly behind a rack of sweaters, yelling at her while she tried to hide. JJ called him out in front of the whole store and asked whether it made him feel good to make someone else feel small. He lunged at her across the store.

Looking back, she sees that moment as her life’s work showing up early. The way women are held down and held back frustrates her in ways she can’t fully explain, and she has never had a problem speaking up about it.

What’s changed is the energy behind it. For years, that frustration drove her. After more than a decade of inner work, she can now share love and light without the anger, and she believes that makes her message far more powerful. Her focus isn’t on going after the bad people. It’s on illuminating the people who need the light.

It made me wonder: what moments from your younger years were pointing you toward your purpose?

Listening for the whispers

JJ calls intuition “the whispers.” Some people call it inner knowing. Whatever the name, it’s quiet, and that was exactly the problem for her.

Her mind was always busy: planning, designing, reflecting, strategizing. There was no room for her inner wisdom to get through. When it did, it came in small moments. On a rental car shuttle at a work event, she heard, bring the women together. Another time, the title of a book chapter simply arrived. Her first response, every time, was “Oh, no, no.”

She believes each of us arrives with specific gifts and a plan to use them. Then life gets loud, and we soak up so much fear and self-doubt from the world around us that we forget what we came to share. The whispers are how we remember.

The three-part frequency reset

We talked a lot about frequency, and how easy it is to live in fear and chaos without realizing it. JJ sees that as a test, especially now. Devices are handed to us early, screens are in every room, and there’s a constant stream telling us what to think, what to like, and what to fear.

Her response has been to protect her energy much more. She used to feel like a victim of her circumstances. When teachers helped her see how low her frequency had dropped, she worked with energy practitioners and read everything she could to raise it.

Today, she boils it down to one habit: pay attention to what you’re paying attention to. That means asking three questions:

  1. What am I listening to? Podcasts, music, news, conversations.
  2. What am I watching? Shows, feeds, the endless scroll.
  3. What am I saying? Not just out loud, but in your own head, about yourself and about others.

Clean those three things up, she says, and your frequency naturally rises. Life starts to feel lighter, more fun, even a little magical. What I love about this is that it requires no retreat or special equipment. You can start this afternoon.

Your friends can see your gifts

When we talked about gifts, JJ made an observation that surprised me: most women assume their gifts are things everyone can do.

She has a friend who makes extraordinary food. But because she isn’t a trained chef, she won’t give herself credit or lean into it. JJ is now helping her start a dinner club so she can begin sharing that gift.

Her challenge is one you can try this week. Next time you’re out with friends, for lunch, breakfast, or cocktails, ask them: “What do you think my gifts are?” Your friends can usually see them. And JJ guarantees that the moment someone names a friend’s gift, whether it’s organizing, writing, or being wonderful with kids, that friend will say, “Oh, no, no.”

We are taught to downplay our gifts. As friends, we can remind each other of them.

Healing is an inside job

After 150 practitioners, you might expect JJ to credit them with fixing her. She doesn’t. JJ sees healers, mystics, and energy workers as people who create opportunities for her to heal herself. She worked through energy from second grade, eighth grade, age 17, and age 25, layer by layer.

She also believes you can’t guide anyone further than you’ve gone yourself. That’s why she waited to lead women through this work until she felt she was on the other side. She has hosted retreats since 2018 and now feels ready to hold space for much bigger gatherings, as well as online events.

The woman who brought a notebook to mindfulness class

This was my favorite story of the conversation. When her life was falling apart, JJ told her therapist she had no joy and didn’t know what to do next. The therapist sent her to a mindfulness class.

She showed up on a Sunday with her coffee and her notebook, ready to make the most of three hours. The teacher asked what she was doing. JJ explained that she’d signed up and figured she could get some things done. She had no idea she wasn’t living in the present moment.

She’d been rewarded her whole life for being productive, so she was productive all the time. It took her two rounds of that eight-week class, 16 weeks in total, to really learn how to be present. Now she doesn’t multitask, and she doesn’t plan her next sentence while you’re talking. She learned that joy and whispers come through in the present moment.

Three practices to start today

For the woman ready to step into her higher self right now, JJ offered three simple practices:

  • Step outside and notice 10 things. Whatever the weather, stand outside and count 10 things you can see, hear or smell. JJ sometimes does this four times a day.
  • Protect your frequency. Run the three questions: what am I listening to, watching, and saying?
  • Practice small gratitude. Not just for the bonus or the big trip. Say thank you for the gas in your car, the coffee in your machine, and a meal you enjoyed. It keeps you present and raises your frequency.

Where JJ’s wisdom meets Radiant Embodiment

As I listened to JJ, I kept hearing echoes of the work I do with my clients every day.

Before I became a coach, I spent nearly two decades as an optometrist, helping people see more clearly. My work is still about vision. Now it’s about the lens through which women see themselves, their stories, and what’s possible for their lives. That’s the heart of my True Lens Method™, a four-part coaching framework:

  1. Heart-Led Transformation: remove emotional blocks and reconnect with your inner voice.
  2. Empowered Vision: gain clarity on your deepest desires and believe in what’s possible.
  3. Authentic Integration: align your daily life with your truth and take inspired action.
  4. Radiant Embodiment: step into your next chapter with confidence, creativity, and magnetic presence.

JJ’s journey moves through every one of these. Learning to hear her whispers is heart-led work: reconnecting with an inner voice drowned out by planning and strategizing. Letting her friends name her gifts, and finally believing them, is empowered vision. Her three questions and her small daily gratitude practice are integration, the everyday choices that bring a life into alignment.

And the way JJ shows up now is what I mean by Radiant Embodiment. She doesn’t multitask. She doesn’t plan her next sentence while you’re talking. She’s fully present, and she shares her light without the old frustration driving it. That’s the difference between knowing who you are and actually living as her.

So many women I work with can already see the life they want. The gap is between seeing it and living it. Radiant Embodiment is where that gap closes: when your new way of seeing shows up in your body, your choices, your relationships, and the energy you bring into a room.

If this episode stirred something in you, start with JJ’s practices this week. Step outside and notice. Clean up what you listen to, watch, and say.
